If you've been in the event space for any amount of time, you've probably heard live event artists say, "We can personalize everything!" I very much agree with that sentiment. The catch is that there isn't one tool that personalizes every material equally well — and honestly, I'm grateful for that. It means every technique gets to do what it does best.
For most of this year, hot foiling has been the star of my event calendar — nearly 90% of my bookings requested it. There's something magical about applying hot foil to smooth leather: it glides on like butter, and the moment you peel back the foil to reveal the design is pure satisfaction, both for me and for the guest watching.
But hot foiling has its limits. It's built for smooth, foil-receptive surfaces — and when a client's event favors are made of wood, velvet, or suede leather, that's where I bring in a different tool entirely: pyrography.
I recently added pyrography to my service offerings to personalize the materials hot foiling can't touch. I tested it on Vivaia's velvet badges, and I'm bringing it to their creator event this week. Here's everything you need to know if you're considering pyrography for your own event favors.
What Is Pyrography?
Pyrography is the art of personalizing an item by burning a design or lettering directly into the material's surface using a heated pen. Unlike hot foiling, which adheres a metallic film to the surface, pyrography creates a debossed, burned finish — subtle, textural, and quietly luxurious. It's the kind of detail that doesn't shout for attention but rewards a closer look.
What Materials Work Best for Pyrography?
Pyrography is best suited for natural, untreated materials. So far, I've personalized:
Wooden trays
Wooden chopping boards
Suede leather bookmarks
Velvet badges
Leather covers of Traveler's Notebooks, made from minimally processed cowhide
My favorite has been working on cowhide leather. Because it's free of synthetic coatings, it's both the safest surface to burn and the one that produces the most visible, tactile result.
A word of caution: pyrography works best on natural, untreated surfaces. Burning synthetic materials — the kind often used to bind wood or treat leather — can release toxic fumes. If your event favors are made from chemically processed or treated leather, I'd recommend hot foiling instead. If you're not sure which category your item falls into, that's exactly what a pre-event sample test is for, and I always recommend one to make sure the material responds safely and beautifully before your event.
What Does the Setup Look Like at an Event?
Pyrography requires a slightly bigger footprint than hot foiling. Here's what I bring:
A pyrography pen with adjustable temperature calibration, since different materials call for different heat settings
A secure, larger pen holder for safety
A portable, low-noise fume extractor to keep the air clear for guests
A P95 mask, which I wear as an added layer of protection for myself
A dedicated table, at least 24 x 36 inches, at 30-inch table height with an 18-inch chair seat height for comfortable, precise work
The safety measures aren't incidental — they're the backbone of how I approach this service. Before calligraphy, I spent 11 years as a nurse, and that background shows up here: I calibrate to the lowest effective temperature to minimize fumes, keep the workstation clear, and never skip ventilation, even when the setup requires more equipment than a typical hot foiling station.
How Long Does Each Personalization Take?
On average, one word takes about 2 minutes to burn into the material. For velvet items, where clients often want the design to stand out more visibly, I follow the pyrography with a permanent metallic marker applied over the debossed area — that adds about 3-4 minutes per piece.
Guests can either watch their item being personalized in real time or pick up the finished piece later in the event.
Is Pyrography Safe?
Yes — when done under the right conditions. I recommend pyrography for events when:
The item is made from natural, untreated material (not chemically processed or synthetically coated)
The setup includes good ventilation, whether through a fan or a fume extractor (which I provide)
Basic safety measures are in place: a clear desk, a secure pen station, and the artist wearing a P95 mask
That said, I'll be honest: pyrography is not my first recommendation. If engraving or hot foiling can achieve the same effect on your event favor, I'll suggest those first — they're safer and come with a more portable setup. I reserve pyrography for the materials that genuinely call for it, when no other technique is compatible with the item.
